Help for birds trapped on sticky tape

Great care must be taken when using sticky-tape to control the lantern-fly population. Non-target animals are often trapped, and they die on the tape or suffer severe injuries.

Half-inch hardware cloth should be completely wrapped around the taped area and secured to the tree both top and bottom. This allows the flies and nymphs through but prevents birds and small mammals from coming in contact with the tape.

If a non-target animal is stuck to the tape, DO NOT TRY TO PULL IT OFF! Cover the remaining tape with tissues and transport the animal to the closest wildlife rehabilitator right away. Go to www.pawr.com for a list of rehabilitators.
