PrettiBird the Moluccan Cockatoo

February 12th we rescued another domestic parrot, a Moluccan Cockatoo. The bird was neglected by the former owners who allowed a broken Elizabethan collar ring on the bird for a year and a half. An ulcer developed under the collar. The bird had plucked out most of it’s feathers and completely shredded what it didn’t pull out.

With good medical care, nutrition and clean food and water this bird will hopefully return to sound health.

The very first thing is to get is a health check from a vet and rule out yeast infections and such.

Toos can be notorious pluckers. Understanding your bird and it’s behavior is the only way to work on issues. Some birds do better with aloe sprays, some need a ball collar, foraging toys and many other techniques. The only way to deal with it is too learn different avenues from people who have been there.

A wonderful resource is SecondChanceBirds.com. They have a forum you can discuss problems and get sound advice. The forum is small but some of the members there are the most knowledged bird people on the net and, unlike many forums, there is no squabbling and back biting. It’s a great group. The forum link is http://secondchancebirds.net/forum/
