Meet George

Ever wonder why they are called “Snapping Turtles?” Just watch the video and you’ll understand why.

George is 5 years old and is the perfect ambassador for his species, a species often misunderstood, feared, hated and persecuted by people.  Perhaps George can help change people’s minds about what this magnificent creature is like.

Handled properly, George is quite docile and friendly. He curiously watches volunteers as they go about daily chores. But great care must be taken at feeding time. His snap is powerful and can injure quickly.

BTW, the pinkie mice he is eating are not alive in this video. They are donated to us frozen and thawed before feeding.

Red Creek Volunteer, Emily, took this photo of George as a baby at the Bear Creek Festival in 2004.
